A passion of a lifetime...

What connects ICICI bank, St Xavier’s college, Joshna Chinnapa and Indiabulls??? This was a question in one of the quizzes I attended recently. Neither of us who attended knew the answer, could not even get close the answer. This was one of the quizzes which dealt with one’s ability to think laterally rater than in a uni-dimensional way. The answer was even more confusing than the question itself, which was LN Mittal.

I am writing about something that has evoked my interest, irrespective of my mood and that's Quizzing. There has always been a sense of fantasy built around this word ever since my childhood days. This is one of those many hobbies, where I have been able to ensure that the levels of passion do not go down. But in this case the level of passion has increased manifold.

Quiz is not about some guesswork, it is an art in itself. While quizzing during school days, I felt that quizzers could do perform well because we knew a lot. I believed essentially quizzing was to do with one ability to recollect a lot of things. There was point of time when I could recall everything in the quizzing stage but could not replicate the performance in school tests and exams. That’s when I could I realized that quizzing was not a test of one’s memory but about one’s ability to infer from the very little you know and come with the answer. Many people around me who know me as a good quizzer believe that I stay awake all the night to memorizing capital of the all countries and heights of mountains. But good quizzing we did was all about to connecting all unconnected things, linking parts of information, inferring the answer by trusting your instincts and all of this happens within a tight deadline.

Quizzing is not about chances, but it is about one’s ability. It calls for snappy decisions and there is no syllabus to learn by heart. By quizzing since fourth class, my thought process happens laterally rather than uni-dimensionally. Thoughts are extremely different (at times, even dreadfully unique) from the entire crowd, making a quizzer stand out when it comes to something ingenious task.

In a quiz we were expected to tell, what was special about the new type of vest that a firm had launched. Probably, I have never thought so hard for any question so hard in my lifetime. I can bet we guys thought in the crudest manner that we ever could, many visualized frames more filthy than a Mahesh Bhatt movie that could ever expose. In spite of such thought process, none of us could come out with right answer.

After about a decade of quizzing, figuring out solutions and answers for many problems especially at work place becomes easy. A fairly good amount quizzing makes one a great data miner, this is ability made life very comfortable at work. The believe astuteness that a quizzer derives is shaped is not by memorization but by instinct, intuition and inference.
