The elections are around the corner in US. It’s the most awaited event of the year, with people world over being glued on to any news from the election front. The election assumes more importance due to the on going financial crisis. The elections in US have been evoke the same feeling as in the case of election after the great depression of 1929, when Franklin. D. Roosevelt was elected.
.
.History in making…
The contenders for the post are two diverse men. A war hero John Mc Cain from the Republican Party is up against a first time governor from Illinois, Barack Obama for the Democrats. Irrespective of who wins the election to be held on November’4, 2008, history is in making. Either the first Afro-American would be taking charge along with the first Roman Catholic (Joe Biden) as a vice president or the oldest first time president will be taking charge along with the first women vice president. It is also the first election after the one in 1928, where none of the incumbents running for the party nomination. And for the first time in history both the presidential nominees are sitting senators.
The Republican Party nominee is a Vietnam War hero and was a prisoner of war until 1973. He lost the bid for the party nominee in 2000 to George. W. Bush. He has chosen Sarah Palin as his running mate. It has rarely happens, as in this case, that the vice presidential candidate gets more attention than the presidential nominee.
This election is all about this young, 46 year old man with a Muslim middle name (Hussein) contesting for the post of president in a country that has been the most affected by terrorism. This guy was born to Barack Obama, Sr., a black Kenyan and Ann Dunham, a white American, Kansas. This man was forced to go to Indonesia for his primary education. He made it the Harvard Law School and became the editor of Harvard Law Review. In Civil Forum on the Presidency he had the courage to admit that during his high school, he used marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol. He has served the Illinois senate.
.
.Even though he had his primary education at Indonesia, he is a great orator. He leaves the audience spell bound with his speeches in his conventions and his campaigns. He was treated like Rock Star in Berlin, in his visit to Germany. His run up to the White House has been gaining momentum which is reflected in the lead he enjoys over McCain. Colin Powell’s backing could not have some in a btter time.
Why is very important in the current context???
Now that recession has set in and the only question is about how deep it is. I feel the recession is not caused by all these complex financial structures. It is caused when people lose confidence in the system. You lose confidence and cut down the activities and others cut down their activity. The real solution the problem lies in regenerating confidence. This is something Obama can do with his speeches and with his Charisma. I hope that Obama wins the polls in November. Even though he will not be in office till January but ha can start playing a major roll and recreate the lost confidence. With him in office and playing his cards well, in few months, the economy can rebuild its entire decline.
Obama has rightly blamed the regulation in place that lead to this downturn. John McCain had blamed it on the high levels of greed. But the question is how does greed suddenly creates such results. It has to do with the regulation in the system. The systems in place should be laid after keeping in mind the ability to have huge profits in a sustained manner.
.
.I firmly believe Obama can recreate the confidence in amongst people who have lost their employment and there lifetime saving in the current crisis. These three words of Obama could do more to generate hope than the measure of the Fed….Yes We Can…
