Perfect Analogy!!!

This post is about a classic resemblance between Indian politics and Australian Cricket – Both in their rise and the fall

In BJP led NDA got elected in the 1999 lok Sabha election, Vajpayee was chosen as the Prime Minister of India. He got elected with the pro-incumbency wave that swept the country after the Kargil War. He inherited a weak economy growing at 5 percent. The fiscal deficit was looming large on the government and Country was yet to recover from the impact of sanctions imposed after the nuclear test. Through his rule, there was the Dot-Com burst and 9/11 which lead to the slow down in the economy. By the end of his tenure in 2004, India was growing at a robust pace of more than 8 percent, fiscal deficit was well within desired levels, forex reserves had increased to comfortable levels and stock market was booming had gone up 7000 levels in 2004. Similarly Steve Waugh inherited an average team from Taylor and structured it into a Champion side. The side started looking invincible and went on to win the world cup and reached the top levels of ICC ranking.

Manmohan Singh, a celebrated economist was handed over the reins as the Prime Minister of a resilient economy in 2004. He fully did justice to his role of playing a puppet to 10, Janpath. As he term gets over, all the good done by previous regime seems to be lost. The economy is growing at a snail pace. Even though the price levels at retail levels is increasing by the day, Wholesale Price Index numbers has been cleverly stitched to show a figure less than 1 percent. The fiscal deficit inclusive of Off-Budget items such as oil bonds is looming large on government. Stock market has tumbled from its highs of 21,000 levels to 10,000 levels. Likewise, Ricky Ponting seems to have partly undone, what his predecessor had done take the team to the top of ranking. He inherited his team, with all those aging greats. He could not produce the same result when most of them were retired and surrendered the ODI top spot to South Africans.

The Manmohan Singh government seems to have received the most appropriate treatment that they deserve for handling internal security with the Home Minister himself getting a Shoe thrown at him!!!
