Mummy Returns???

Will Mummy (Amma) emerge as “Comeback Queen” post-May 16th??? Its been good three years since she has gone into hibernation. And three years is a long time to for a leader of her stature to be subdued. Inspite of a fairly performing government she lost to the Umbrella Alliance of Opposition in the 2006 legislative assembly election. Tamil Nadu is known for complete sweeps right from the days of MGR in both legislative assembly and for Parliament. Even though she could not retain power in 2006, it a Himalayan task to effort to win more than 80-odd seats despite anti-incumbency.

She has stitched together an umbrella alliance with four major parties, something similar to the alliance that routed her party in the last election in 2004. She has driven a hard bargain in the seat sharing agreement with the alliance partners and is contesting in 23 seats out of the total 40. The alliance is expected to win 25-30 seats, which puts her in nice position to bargain for good number of ministries in the potential central government.

She is one of the few leaders in the country who can go with any of the three fronts. If she combines with the Congress, she can even bring down the minority DMK government in the state. She can any day find ideological proximity with the BJP, who has been a previous ally of hers. Now that she is with Left, she could be playing an important role in the Centre. The future looks very bright for AMMA – as of now Chennai can only listen to one tune and that is

Jai Ho Amma!!!
